Booth presentations

Biodiversity Archive of Gdynia Aquarium

Step into the world of underwater discoveries and explore the richness of marine life across seas and oceans. At the Gdynia Aquarium booth, you’ll find hands-on educational workshops for all ages, a presentation of unique specimens – including those collected during historic scientific expeditions – and a microscope station featuring the flora and fauna of the Baltic Sea. Discover fascinating facts about Atlantic horseshoe crabs, a species that has existed since the time of dinosaurs, and learn why protecting marine ecosystems is vital for the future.

stornit

The Baltic Sea is a body of water where we encounter an extraordinary wealth of bird species. Some of them nest on the coast and Baltic islands, others rest and feed during their spring and autumn migrations. There is also a group of birds that find wintering grounds here. Observations carried out in the Baltic in recent years, especially of wintering birds, show a decline in species abundance and diversity. This is mainly influenced by climate change and other negative human impacts.
Among other things, we will talk about these problems at our educational booth. There we will also show selected specimens of marine bird species from the Station’s collection, feathers, ornithological rings, posters and ornithological publications. Educational materials will be available.

fokarium

The Baltic Sea, as a shallow inland sea with low salinity and relatively busy shipping lanes, is susceptible to the introduction of alien species, among others through ship ballast water, and their settlement. Alien species are non-native species that were introduced outside their natural range (in the past or present) and beyond their natural ability to expand. Their presence is a side effect of human activity or deliberate introduction. Among the newcomers are species from Asia (the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis),  North America (the Harris mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii) and the Ponto-Caspian region (the round goby Neogobius melanostomus). Some alien species will only be recorded a few times, while others are so adaptable and well-suited to their new environment that they will be able to form new populations that may threaten native species of fauna and flora. The latter are a subgroup of alien species called invasive species.

For all information on alien species in the Baltic Sea, please visit the stand of the Prof. Krzysztof Skóra Hel Marine Station, the University of Gdańsk and the Foundation for the Development of the University of Gdańsk.

What is the Baltic Sea facing?

The Baltic Sea is unique on a global scale. Besides its fascinating natural beauty, it unfortunately faces numerous challenges. During workshops prepared by the Experyment Science Center, we will present various aspects of marine pollution. We will identify the nutrients found in seawater and discuss their impact on the ecosystem. We will discuss eutrophication, plastic pollution, and oil spills, and how to address them. You will also learn how you can help scientists collect data by participating in citizen science projects. Together, we will explore how conditions in the Baltic Sea affect biodiversity and the life of the plant and animal species present there.

Hevelianum

As anyone who has tasted seawater can see, not all water is the same. Water can be both a life-giving liquid and toxic waste. Visit the Hevelianum stand, where you will conduct experiments from our ecological workshop repertoire and discover fascinating facts about the Baltic Sea! You will have the opportunity to make microscopic observations, examine water samples, determine whether they are drinkable, and observe chemical reactions in water. What are oxygen deserts? Where do blue-green algae come from? You will learn the answers to these questions and more at our booth!

Meet Kłębek the Crab

Life underwater can be full of surprises, and the daily routines of Baltic Sea creatures might be more similar to ours on land than you’d expect. Join us for a workshop where you’ll meet Kłębek the Crab, who loves to snip everything he comes across. We’ll also share the story of how Kłębek came to live in the Baltic Sea, even though his great-great-great-great-grandfather was born in Asia.

We invite families with children aged 5–10 to visit the Emigration Museum in Gdynia. There, you’ll meet the authors of the book about Kłębek the Crab and create your own crab-themed souvenir together.

Art in Defense of Rivers

The River Sisters invite you to take part in a workshop where participants will experience how activists prepare artistic happenings and how they combine river knowledge with art. During the workshop, we will create name boards dedicated to beloved rivers. We will learn to sing songs that accompany actions and protests — and even write a few new verses together, especially for this gathering by the Baltic Sea.

We will talk about the connection between all fresh and salt waters, the role of sand, and the destructive impact of dams on the biodiversity of rivers, seas, and oceans.

At the end of the workshop, we will hold a ceremonial welcoming of new River Sisters and Stream Brothers into the Blue Collective.

The River Sisters are a blue collective of activists and artists. We defend wild and free-flowing rivers. We create women-led social campaigns, happenings, actions, and protests. Our symbol is a blue plaque with white lettering and wave motifs.

The initiator and founder of the River Sisters is Kraków-based artist and activist Cecylia Malik.
The River Sisters are part of the Save the Rivers Coalition and European Water Bodies.

The workshop will start at 11:00 AM. The number of places is limited —

please register using the form by September 18.

Our booth offers a perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build confidence in providing first aid in critical situations. Come by, test your skills, and leave prepared to help in emergencies!

Game of oceans

Did you know that oceans cover more than 70% of our planet’s surface, yet we still know them less well than the surface of the Moon? At our booth, you will find interactive games and challenges dedicated to nature, oceans, and the idea of sustainable development. No matter your age – from small children to adults – everyone will discover something exciting.

After thrilling adventures at the game table, we invite you to our “Water Bar” – a place where the tastes of seas and oceans meet in one “port.” You can sample water from different corners of the world – from the almost fresh Baltic Sea, through the crystal-clear Mediterranean, to the dense, mineral-rich Dead Sea. Don’t worry – all water will be laboratory-prepared and completely safe to drink. Each sip tells a story – about salinity, climate, and the incredible diversity of life. During the tasting, you’ll see on the screen the sea whose flavor you’re experiencing and hear its real waves.

It’s a journey without passports or tickets – but full of discoveries, inspiration, and marine stories that will stay with you for a long time.

Ocean Literacy helps us understand how the oceans affect us and how we affect the oceans – this marine awareness is the key to a sustainable future, because #WeAllLiveByTheSea.

Our specialists will answer these and many other questions. You will learn, among other things, why cavern storage facilities are the safest and most innovative way to store gas. We will show you a 3D cross-section of a cavern and explain what else can be stored inside it.

We warmly invite you to visit the GAS STORAGE POLAND booth.

MSC

We invite children and adults to visit our booth full of ocean-themed attractions! You’ll find interesting educational materials about the oceans, fun marine-themed temporary tattoos, and a raffle with small prizes. You’ll learn why oceans are so important, which fish to choose to eat responsibly, what the MSC certification means, and how each of us can help care for marine ecosystems.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization established to safeguard the wild nature of our oceans. We tackle the problem of irresponsible fishing practices that have a damaging impact on the environment. We recognize and reward the efforts of those working to preserve ocean resources for future generations.

Seaweed

We are an interdisciplinary team exploring the complex relationship between humans and the Baltic Sea. Through education, research, and design, we support its protection and seek responsible ways of using its resources. We pay special attention to algae, such as the red seaweed Furcellaria lumbricalis, and their role in regenerating the Baltic ecosystem. We give the Sea a voice!

Building a World Without Waste

We’re building a waste-free world, starting from ourselves: where we live, work, or rest.

Using our mobile machines, we demonstrate how technology helps us create everyday objects. The raw materials are our own waste, sourced from wherever we live, work, or rest.

We hope that our activities will contribute to the reduction of single-use plastic and the better use of biogenic waste in the “farm to fork” cycle.

Specifically, at our stand you can make a comb or a hook from household plastic or a cup from a biopolymer based on coffee grounds or orange pomace!

Environmental monitoring – bioindicators

Do you know what organisms inhabit the spaces between grains of sand and what role they play in the ecosystem? At our stand, you will have the opportunity to learn how the beach works. You will find out what organisms live between grains of sediment and how important their presence is. Small organisms (meiofauna) are the focus of the project “NEMO – Unrecognised biodiversity changes in the Baltic Sea described by novel eDNA analyses of the meiofauna.” (funded by the National Science Centre). The aim of this project is to expand the range of marine bioindicators to include organisms that dominate the seabed, but whose small size and inconspicuous appearance make them extremely difficult to identify. To overcome these limitations, we will use the tools of environmental genomics, which involves identifying species based on their DNA isolated from environmental samples.

From a Cosmic Point of View – Satellite Observations of the Baltic Sea Waters

Do you know how to unravel the mysteries of the color of the sea as seen from space? We will answer this and other questions by presenting the latest research methods based on satellite remote sensing to assess the scale and intensity of phenomena occurring across the waters of the entire Baltic Sea. We will tell you about the nature of visible light and show how sensors on satellites work. We will discuss what determines and how the signal from the sea to the satellite changes, and how this information can be used to study the marine environment. We will answer the question of why seas differ in color and how the presence of algae and other components affects the color of the sea.
Additionally, we will trace how the salty water of the North Sea flows through the straits and spreads across the Baltic Sea floor.
There will be coloring pages, crossword puzzles, riddles, puzzles, and quizzes for you to solve on your own – Join us!

Baltic Sea in Numbers and Forecasts

The Ocean and Atmosphere Numerical Modelling Laboratory of Polish Academy of Sciences, develops numerical models used to analyze circulation, ice cover, wave dynamics, and material transport in the marine environment.

At our stand, we will demonstrate how our models help forecast weather conditions, sea waves, and changes in currents and temperature in the Baltic Sea — and how these results support everyday scientific research.

Visitors will have the chance to use interactive tools to explore what the Baltic Sea might look like in a few days: how weather conditions will change, where the strongest winds will blow, where the warmest waters for swimming will be, and where the highest waves will occur.

Our model results complement measurement data and help us better understand past behavior of the sea and anticipate different future scenarios.

Discover the sea that can’t be seen with the naked eye – come and join us!

In the World of Fish: Skin Under the Microscope and Genetic Code Research

Fish skin responds to changes in the environment, such as temperature fluctuations or the presence of pollutants. In response to stress, the coloration of fish skin may change, which is linked to the dispersion or concentration of pigment in pigment cells. Skin coloration can be useful in assessing the condition of fish.

At our educational booth, visitors will have the opportunity to:

  • observe pigment cell changes in fish skin under a microscope
  • prepare their own microscope slides using plant tissues
  • learn about fish anatomy and morphology through educational games
  • expand your knowledge about DNA, RNA, and the genetic code of fish in an easy and accessible way
  • test their knowledge about fish species found in the Baltic Sea by solving crosswords, puzzles, and word searches
  • younger visitors can enjoy creative play by building their own fish models

Argo – robots tracking the changing oceans

What happens beneath the surface of the oceans, in the depths where sunlight cannot reach and humans cannot venture? To find the answer, scientists use unique robots – Argo floats. These autonomous devices travel through ocean waters, measuring conditions even two kilometers below the surface.

Argo floats are part of an international system that operates continuously around the globe. They collect data on temperature, salinity, and other properties of seawater, then transmit the information to scientists via satellite communication. Thanks to them, we can observe how the oceans are changing – both in the tropics and in polar regions.

Poland actively participates in this global effort. The Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences runs the Argo Poland program, within which our floats collect data from the Baltic Sea and the Arctic Ocean. This information helps scientists better understand the influence of the oceans on climate and marine ecosystems.

What will you find at our booth?
• See a real Argo float – inside and out.
• Learn how the robot takes measurements and what happens to the data it collects.
• Explore up-to-date data from Polish Argo missions presented in maps and charts.

Join us at our booth – dive into the world of modern oceanography and see how Argo robots explore our changing oceans.

Chemistry of a waterdrop

We cordially invite the participants of the Picnic to take part in scientific experiments!

We will analyse the condition of seawater and river water by examining the presence of biogenic compounds, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus. We will also check how salty sea water can be – we will use various methods for this. We will also try different ideas for having fun with dry ice.
