Seas and oceans are the key to a friendly and sustainable planet. Our joint actions and solutions, both in terms of science and all activities, can contribute to the protection of the oceans and the maintenance of ecological balance on Earth. We call this sustainable development. High maritime awareness has a direct impact on our well-being. By caring together, connecting people and oceans, we can jointly strive for sustainable development. We want to know and understand contemporary problems of the marine environment, live in a clean and healthy environment, protected, restored and consciously managed. With open access to data, information, technology development and innovation, let’s engage in a common goal – working for the global Ocean in such a condition that will guarantee favorable conditions for future generations.
The idea of the competition is to raise maritime awareness, through cooperation of the scientific and art environment. We hope that through art we will also engage its recipients to support the mission of the Ocean Decade. We want to present the female point of view of maritime issues, both from the scientific and artistic side. We are convinced that the significant participation of women in promoting social changes, in connection with their sensitivity, will help us achieve these goals. The idea of the project, and ultimately the exhibition, which we want to develop, came from observation – despite the fact that for many years women have been conducting independent and ambitious scientific research at sea, the story about the sea still belongs to men. Literature, film, popularization are full of images where elements such as survival, resilience, strength against the element are key elements of the story.
The woman-artist, hereinafter referred to as the Participant, will create a work inspired by a selected scientific issue. These are topics implemented by Polish sea researchers. We strongly encourage you to connect these two worlds through direct contact of the artist with the scientist. We will help you meet in person or online, so that between the artist and the scientist a thread of understanding is created, which will become the warp of the competition work.
The artwork can be in any technique (or a photograph of the work) fitting within the 70 x 100 cm frame for the selected and approved issue. To sign up, just fill out a short application form on the website (link at the bottom of the page). We strongly encourage you to include elements in the techniques and materials used in the work that will express actions for sustainable development (e.g. use of recycled materials, use of reclaimed paints, creation of a digital work, reduction of water consumption or creation of a clear message related to the issue, etc.). It is worth including this issue in a short description of the work.
The selected competition works will create, together with the works distinguished in the first edition, an exhibition dedicated to the Women’s Image of the Sea at the State Art Gallery in Sopot.
Terms of participation:
